Making it over there

I admit it: I’ve been a Jack Hawksworth fan for a while now. I find it difficult not to respect a young driver who saw no prospect of raising serious GP3/GP2 money in Europe and thus focused 100 per cent on racing in America. It isn’t easy in the States; far from it. New culture. New types of racing. New places. There is, though, a “Road to Indy” scholarship system that rewards young drivers from the Pro Mazda (formerly Star Mazda) Series through Indy Lights and thence to IndyCar – a sort of Red Bull progression for those unfortunate enough not have Red Bull money. Jack, a quick karter  and Formula Renault driver in England, had no compunction about making the change and sustaining his motivation.

And this year, in IndyCar, he’s delivered. Driving for another true racer – Bryan Herta – Jack led races and scored a podium finish in Houston. Now the sky’s the limit, as he told me when we chatted a few days ago.

Down to the wire

Here is the third and final part of this week’s show, specially segmented for YouTube viewers.  In this section we look back at last weekend’s Indian GP and then talk to the GP2 Championship leader, Switzerland’s Fabio Leimer, shortly after his arrival in Abu Dhabi.   Fabio, who drives for the Spanish-based Racing Engineering team, currently holds a slender points lead over England’s Sam Bird (who is well-known to regular viewers of our show).  In our analysis of the GP2 and GP3 title deciders, I’m joined in the studio by Tom Gaymor, the former lower-rung single-seater driver whose promising career was cut short by an accident (from which he has now fully recovered).  As well as voicing the new F1 smart-device, livetream app, Tom also calls GP3 and Porsche Supercup races for Eurosport.  He loves his racing – as he loves all sport – and is as passionate about it now as he was when he was competing himself.   He lives in nearby Teddington, sharing an apartment with the very talented Porsche driver, Richie Stanaway.  Don’t forget that the full-length version of the show can be downloaded from tonight on iTunes;  in the meantime I hope you enjoy this special “preview” segments.

“I was laughing; I couldn’t stop laughing…”

He began 2012 without a regular drive; then Trevor Carlin offered him a GP3 seat. He quickly showed his talent and speed – and was rewarded in May with a Red Bull Junior Team contract. Instantly competitive in the much bigger and faster World Series by Renault cars, Portugal’s Antonio Felix da Costa nonethless continues to race GP3 with Carlin. In Hungary, on July 28/29, he made history by winning GP3 on both Saturday and Sunday. I spoke to Antonio prior to the Silverstone WSR race on August 25/26.

Slick Finish

Will Buller and Conor Daly finished one-two in Sunday’s British GP GP3 support race – but only after starting on slicks.  In the wet.  Here, Conor talks about that decision – and about his straight-line test on Thursday for Sahara Force India

Tiago Monteiro on the WTCC, Ocean’s GP2 and GP3 teams…and female racers

In the build-up to the GP2 season opener in Malaysia this weekend, I caught up with Tiego Monteiro, the former Portuguese F1 driver who now enjoys a vibrant career as a WTCC driver for SEAT and as Team Owner of the Ocean GP2 and GP3 teams. Spain’s Carmen Jorda has also recently signed to drive GP3 with Ocean so we talk, too, about the future of women in motor sport.

Antonio Felix da Costa

He’s shown his pace in F Renault, F3, GP3, GP2 – and even in F1, at the Young Driver test in Abu Dhabi.  Portugal’s (very talented) Antonio Felix da Costa talks about his 2011 GP3 season with Status; the ongoing difficulties of raising a decent budget; and his plans for 2012
